BBC NEWS | Entertainment | TV and Radio | Legendary radio DJ John Peel dies

A sad day for music today! Peel was one of the great DJs of all time.

Also, Greg Shaw, founder of Bomp! Records passed last week.

And Ashlee Simpson can't sing AND suffers from acid reflux. Horrors! All this time I thought she was sooooo punk rock.

CNN.com - San Francisco aims for free citywide WiFi - Oct 22, 2004

Very cool. I'm sure it will be 20 years before anything like this happens in Atlanta, although I did read that Woodruff Park in downtown is getting wifi soon.

Note: AJC link requires registration.

LISNews.com | US Public Library of Science launches rival to 'The Lancet'

This is great news on the open source/ open access front. If PLoS could effectively compete with Lancet et al in terms of a general medical publication then there's hope to free up more information from ridiculous subscription charges and move it into the 20th (if not 21st) century in terms of technology and access.

Creative Commons Stuff

Some news type stuff about copyright and Creative Commons from LISnews. Interesting reads! I've been reading Free Culture by Lawrence Lessig and it is fascinating.

GA Conference on Info Lit

Greetings from La Fairfield. There's free wifi in the hotel, which is very cool. But no in-room coffee. Go figure.

There were some very interesting presentations today. Good stuff about communicating/ collaborating with faculty, lots of freshman writing program stuff. Good random tips in the middle of other things too. There are a surprising number of teaching faculty here (mostly English) in addition the librarians. Dennis Jerz from Seton Hill (not Seton Hall!), who is presenting in same session w/ Charles Tyron tomorrow, was in a couple of my sessions and had some good perspectives on things from the teaching side.

Hopefully there will be an Information Lit blog type thing for GPC soon to post some of the presentations etc.

Statesboro Blues

I'm going to Statesboro this afternoon for the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy. It actually looks like a very interesting lineup of speakers. Charles Tryon, a professor from GA Tech who uses blogging in his English 1101 classes, is speaking which should be interesting. Among other things.

The hotel claims to have free Internet (at least before it changed owner) so i'll try blogging something from the road. Or if there's wifi in the conference center.

.com VS .org

This is a great example of what a "little" mistake like a wrong URL can do: you get porn instead of the White House, anti-environmental regulation instead of green, or the wrong campaign site. Wish I had heard about this before my Internet class yesterday, but I'll definitely use it in the future.

BTW: I've never met John Edwards or Dick Cheney and will give an adult beverage to anyone who can prove otherwise.

My Yahoo/ RSS Reader

I vaguely remember reading about this in beta test mode. Haven't tested it yet but sounds very promising for getting people into feeds. I've mentioned using an aggregator to a couple of people to read our library feed and they glaze over. But they might get it if its a part of Yahoo, for better or worse.

The Shifted Librarian

10/7 Update: I tried out the My Yahoo RSS service and it is really easy to use. I added the Decatur Library news blog by copying and pasting the feed. That's supposed to make it searchable in their RSS database but it doesn't show up yet. I added an "Add to My Yahoo" button too, which was very easy. I also realized there's no feed for this blog so I'll fix that next week.

NEWS.com.au | Boy adopted by chimps (archived)

Interesting feral child story!

Saw a great feral children show on Discovery Channel (or something like that) the morning after the Oblivians reunion show in Memphis last year. It was fitting for some reason.
